Planned Parenthood Northern California (PPNorCal) is seeking a Health Education Specialist for our Ukiah Health Center. This role is full-time, 40 hours per week. SUMMARY

The Health Education Specialist will be responsible for the assigned region’s education programming by implementing the Adolescent Sexual Health Education program as part of a grant supported by the California Department of Public Health, including community and school-based education delivery, youth development, and community outreach and engagement activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Coordinate and implement the following duties and responsibilities with the support of the Education Manager and in compliance with policies and procedures.

  • Implement regional projects/programs using PPNorCal approved program protocols, procedures, curricula, logic models, and accountability standards.
  • Ensure that all education and outreach materials utilized in the field have been approved following education policies and procedures and approval methodology.
  • Deliver medically accurate, bias-free, age and developmentally appropriate, inclusive, and culturally responsive reproductive and sexual health education in-person and virtually to groups of varying ages, cultures, and backgrounds.
  • Utilize a reproductive justice/social justice framework for the implementation of education programming, in accordance with PPNorCal’s DEI commitment and framework.
  • Formalize relationships with school sites and community-based organizations through the establishment of MOUs with the support of the Fiscal and Contracts Manager.
  • Using a quality assurance framework, implement PPNorCal education programs; collect and review program documentation and track data.
  • Manage scheduling of classes, community outreach and engagement activities.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Education Manager regarding program status and evaluate program effectiveness; recommend solutions, as needed to the Education Manager.
  • Attend internal and external meetings and trainings.
  • Perform administrative tasks, including expenses and timesheets, maintain an up-to-date calendar using Microsoft Outlook, schedule meetings, prepare reports, maintain records, and purchase supplies.
  • Collect and report demographics; track data and report on program status to accurately reflect grant and budget reports.
  • Provide information about Planned Parenthood services and make appropriate referrals.
  • Maintain and expand effective collaborative relationships with community health organizations, schools, and other community-based organizations.
  • Participate in professional networks within the community as needed
  • Serve as a liaison and resource for parents/guardians and school personnel.
  • Represent PPNorCal at local and regional events and meetings, as assigned.
  • Attend regional, statewide, or national conferences, as assigned.
  • Assist other members of the Community Health team when assigned or necessary.
  • Actively participate in and support the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts of PPNorCal.
  • Coordinate with the Education Manager to implement the Adolescent Sexual Health Education (ASH Ed) program
  • Effectively administer and oversee the ASH Ed program requirements as outlined in the Scope of Work.
  • Meet the ASH Ed planning and reporting requirements by conducting a needs assessment, developing a comprehensive implementation plan, and prepare required reports.
  • Complete training to effectively implement all applicable program components.
  • Implement the ASH Ed Program core activities including site identification, recruitment and retention of program participants, and implementation of approved curricula.
  • Meet federal, state, and local program monitoring and evaluation requirements including data collection, reporting, and quality improvement activities.
  • Educate and engage key stakeholders to inform the development and implementation of the ASH Ed Program activities and effectively address the sexual and reproductive health needs of local adolescent populations experiencing the greatest inequities in health and social outcomes.
  • Implement strategic community outreach and engagement efforts to reach and meaningfully engage youth experiencing the greatest inequities in social and health outcomes.
  • Form and/or maintain participation in regular meetings with a Local Stakeholder Coalition (LSC).
  • Develop and implement clinical linkages for program participants to address local adolescent sexual and reproductive health needs.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) from four-year college or university or three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret general business periodicals, professional and academic journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively and sensitively present age and developmentally appropriate sexuality education and information to children, youth, teens, and adults. Ability to respond to questions from diverse groups of people such as, community professionals/leaders, program clients, and the general public. Ability to provide inclusive and culturally responsive education and community engagement programming.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

COMPUTER SKILLS

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite. Ability to learn new programs and systems. Experience with research using reputable sources. Experience with web-based meeting and education programs and platforms.

OTHER SKILLS, ABILITIES, QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior knowledge or experience implementing and facilitating sexual health and/or sexuality education program implementation.
  • Prior knowledge or experience in youth development and outreach.
  • Comfort in discussing human sexuality and reproductive/sexual health topics in a sensitive, age-appropriate, and culturally appropriate manner.
  • Experience with mandated reporting beyond initial training.
  • Experience providing inclusive and culturally responsive programming.
  • Experience working within a social justice or reproductive justice lens.
  • Ability to work independently in a leadership and mentor role with youth.
  • Experience with small-group facilitation.
  • Strong organizational and listening skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and successfully meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time independently and to complete multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively in a diverse team and community environment.
  • Competence with computers for writing, communicating, and researching.
  • Knowledge of assigned region/counties and service area preferred.
  • Must be willing to work early mornings, evenings, and weekends.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Must have reliable automobile transportation and a valid California Driver's License and automobile insurance.
  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) - preferred but not required.

Pay Range: Planned Parenthood Northern California (PPNorCal) supports California’s new law (SB 1162) enhancing pay transparency. This new law requires employers with 15 or more employees to include a pay range in job postings. The pay range reflects the compensation that a new employee can expect to receive if offered employment. Employees with more experience, education, and other qualifying factors may be compensated at a higher rate of pay. The pay range for this position is: $24.00 - $27.00 per hour.
